| REVIEW
- My First abc's & Spelling |
|
 |
| RATING:
8 - PC USER MAY 2002 |
 |
 |
This title is an excellent starting
point for beginning readers and writers,
as it's developed in Australia for Australian
children - a real bonus in a market
where so many programs use US spelling
and voiceovers.
In the game, your mission is to help
Mick Millennium catch the Word Pirates,
who are trying to take control of the
Word Treasure. The pirates have captured
and caged all the animals on Skull Island,
and the keys you collect as you complete
activities will help you set them free.
If you successfully complete the final
test, you will capture the Word Pirates
and save all the words.
The graphics are crisp and bright, all
instructions are verbal and clearly
delivered, and all the activities have
a sound educational base. Each activity
has three skill levels. For instance,
in Alphabet Fun Facts, you progress
from lower-case letters, to lower-case
and upper-case letters side by side,
through to upper-case letters alone
- just as reading is taught in the classroom.
Each letter is accompanied by the sound
the letter makes, a word starting with
the letter and the object the word identifies.
There are also activities to develop
spelling, prewriting and computer skills.
A 32-page activity and colouring book
and a parents' handbook are bundled
with the software [now only in printable
format from the CD], and there are teachers'
notes on the CD. The program is [now
only] available in DVD-style packaging.
Although it lacks the character appeal
of some titles based on children's TV
shows and books, this is a quality educational
product. My First abc's & Spelling
is an excellent resource for parents
to use with older preschoolers and would
be a welcome addition to any infants'
classroom. |
